  15. ballet dancer and former director of the Paris Opera Ballet;
  16. from pericarditis and, reportedly, from AIDS. Born in Irkutsk
  17. and trained in Leningrad, Nureyev displayed expressiveness and
  18. mastery as a dancer, which won him a solo role with the Kirov
  19. in 1958; three years later, he defected on tour in Paris and
  20. became a celebrated dancer in the West.
